Flippin awesome!
So, I had my first experience of using video to support learning in my classroom. I will have to say that it was a HUGE success. This is what I did:
I recorded the process of making a clay koauau in my office, using photo booth on my laptop. I thought OK most times when I have taught the process, I often have to repeat myself because some students take longer than others to grasp a technique (such as pinching).
So the very next day I put the video to test - I actually made students watch it first (I think I'll get feedback from kids to see if this was helpful or frustrating) Judging by their koauau, they were very successful. Now, whether that was due to the fact that they watched it first or that they could actually stop, rewind and watch it again - that's what I'm interested in finding out. #askthekids It was quite awesome to see students engaged and working at their own pace in small groups.
I have also found the flip videos SUPER helpful for students who were absent. It means I can carry on teaching my current class and check in with how those absent students are getting on
Problems?
My only REAL issue were with students who don't have their own devices. I have 6 laptops available to students in my class with one good mac book pro (that holds its charge) and 5 white macs that need to be plugged in for students to use it. 2 of the 5 laptops that need to be plugged in to work have actual chargers! The rest have none = no good to me! HELP Mr Pulham! Apparently Graham has some spare chargers somewhere so I'm looking forward to having those - I also spotted some desktop Macs under the bench in the library and wonder if they are utilised?
I'm a little frustrated with the lack of resources (desktope or ipads anything really) because I have a site running that has all my support material (including flip vids) that I want students to access everyday. I also have a class blog up and running that I wish students to contribute to regularly.
Anyway, my next focus is... Get those chargers and ANY other devices for students to use during class time. I'm also playing around with ideas of how to film techniques live so students can see via the TV screen. I have an iPhone that I have cast via Apple TV but it's quite fiddly and experiences quite a bit of lag... But watch this space..
